The archipelagos of Hawaiʻi and Borikén (Puerto Rico) share many similarities- both are island nations, enjoy a tropical climate due to similar latitude, import roughly the same percentage of food, have a tenuous history with the U.S., are home to indigenous communities working to reclaim cultural practices and language, etc. In this island-to-island collaboration and cross-cultural community engagement, the Kahiau Hawaiian Club plans to bring 8 students and 4 staff from the University of Hawaii -West Oʻahu to Borikén to engage in conversations related to sovereignty, indigenous wisdom, food system resilience, community/indigenous health, mitigation of climate change effects, cultural reclamation and social justice, and community-led restoration efforts post-Hurricanes Maria and Irma.
